IT607 System Development and Project Management

Description
This course combines project management methods and structured systems development techniques and applies them to the complex world of information systems development.  The central project management functions planning, organizing and controlling are presented in the context of the systems development process.  Topics include project planning, estimating, testing, implementation, documentation, management of change, utilization of services consultants, software houses, turn-key systems and proprietary software packages.

Goals and Objectives

Upon completion of the course the student will possess the following competencies:

·      Given the basics of project management and a good project idea (no less than 6 months or longer than 2 years in duration), identify, and develop a plan for project integration management.

·      Given the processes required to ensure that the project includes all the work required and a good plan for project integration management, develop a scope statement and management plan.

·      Given the appropriate processes required to ensure timely completion of the project, a scope statement and management plan, compose and organize a project under time and resource constraints.

·      Given the processes required to ensure that the project is completed within the approved budget, time and resource constraints, develop a budget for a project.

·      Given the processes required to ensure that the project will satisfy the needs for which it was undertaken and a sound budget, develop a quality management plan for a project.

·      Given good human resource management skills and a quality management plan, make a plan with the most effective use of the people involved with the project.

·      Given the basis of good communication skills and a human resources management plan, ensure timely and appropriate generation, collection, dissemination, storage, and ultimate disposition of project information.

·      Given techniques used to minimize and the successfully accomplished prior objectives, identify, analyze, and respond to project risk.

·      Given the background of procurement processes and the successful completion of all previous objectives, acquire goods and services from outside the performing organization.
