Dr. Velayo is currently teaching Critical Thinking and Problem Solving for the Pace University/NACTEL program.  As a full-time faculty member of Pace University’s Psychology Department, he teaches Experimental Psychology, Statistics, General Psychology, Psychology of Learning and Motivation, Developmental Psychology, Behavior Modification, and Thinking Skills.

Dr. Velayo obtained his Ph.D. in Psychology and Education from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, specializing in Cognitive Psychology and Educational Technology. He obtained his M.A. in Applied Behavioral Analysis from the University of the Pacific, B.A. in Psychology and B.A. in Sociology-Anthropology from De La Salle University (magna cum laude), Manila, Philippines.

His scholarly interests focus on multimedia technology as pedagogical tools in classroom instruction. His other scholarly interests are in learning, cognition, and motivation focusing on the following:

  1. instructional modality and learning processes,
  2. the effects of cognitive-motivational characteristics on learning, memory, and strategy use,
  3. critical thinking strategies in learning contexts, and
  4. applications of Internet and multimedia technology in academic contexts.

He has published in peer-reviewed journals such as The International Journal of Instructional Media, Journal of Instructional Psychology, Teaching of Psychology, Reading Improvement, NYS Psychologist, and Educational Technology.

His scholarly works have been presented in various regional and national conferences including those of the American Psychological Association (APA), the American Psychological Society (APS), the Eastern Psychological Association (EPA), and the National Institute on the Teaching of Psychology (NIToP).

Dr. Velayo has taught at Montana State University, University of Michigan, and De La Salle University before coming to Pace University as a full-time faculty member of the Psychology Department.

In addition to being the Editor-in-chief of the "Psych Eye" newsletter, the official newsletter of Pace University's Psychology Department (NYC), he is also an active reviewer of a number of psychology and education journals including Associate Editor of the Journal of Research on Computing in Education and editorial board member of the International Journal of Instructional Media. The New York State Psychological Association, in 1997, awarded him the Virginia Staudt Sexton Award for Early Career Contributions to Academic Psychology and in 2002, the Distinguished Service Award. He is also the recipient of the 2000 Distinguished Award for Outstanding Service at Pace's Employee Recognition Ceremony. He is a full member of select professional and academic organizations including Sigma Xi (The Scientific Research Society), Psi Chi (The Honor Society in Psychology), the American Psychological Association (Fellow Status), the American Psychological Society, the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS) where he contributes as an advisory board member of the Psychology Division, and various other regional psychology organizations. He has served as the Secretary of the New York Faculty Council (Pace, NY) and chaired the Academic Resources Committees of Dyson College and NY Faculty Council.

In January 2000 - August 2002, he was Acting Chair of the Speech Communication Studies Department in the NY campus of Pace University. He is the 2004 President of the Division of International Psychology (Division 52) of the American Psychological Association in which he also served as the organization's Membership Chair and Program Chair. He is also the International Council of Psychologists' Representative to the United Nations and is the Vice-Chair and an Advisory Board Member of the Psychology Section of the New York Academy of Sciences. He currently serves as the Coordinator for the MA in General Psychology Program, and Technology Coordinator for Pace University's Psychology Department (NYC), and is member of the Society of Fellows of Dyson College, and the Webmaster for the Pace's NY Faculty Council.
